Victoria Road residents amused by street party

The road was closed to traffic to allow partying in the street, and such was the level of support that extra tables and chairs had to be brought from people’s homes and additional supplies fetched by London Road butchers to meet demand for its barbecue.

Leading organiser, Michael Ensor, said: “We had an absolutely fantastic day and it was just great to be there. Folk band Jiggit and morris dancers Hannah’s Cat provided musical entertainment and Charlie the Clown was a big hit, especially with the youngsters.

“Children also enjoyed face-painting and a bouncy castle, while my concerns that a tug-of-war might lack support proved ill-founded, as we had eight teams, including ladies’ teams, step up to the mark for that. And we also had best fancy dress and best decorated house competitions.

“A cinema-sized screen was available for people to watch the wedding ceremony itself, and it was just a gloriously fun day.

“Even the weather was kind, although when we came to clear away in the evening the heavens finally opened and some of us got drenched.”
